Research & insight

Discovery research

Discovery answers the questions you must settle before designing anything: who the users are, what they are trying to do, what gets in their way and what the organisation needs to change. We run discoveries for government departments, regulated businesses and product teams, in person and remotely.

Recent discoveries include court listing for the Ministry of Justice, a new benefits service for the Department for Work and Pensions, housing options for MHCLG, the Lloyd’s of London placing platform and electric vehicle charging for bp pulse.

Methods we use

  • One-to-one interviews and contextual observation with users and staff
  • Ethnographic and diary studies for behaviour over time
  • Surveys and analytics to size what the qualitative work finds
  • Stakeholder workshops to surface constraints and align on the problem
  • Accessibility-inclusive recruitment so the findings reflect everyone who uses the service

What you get

Personas grounded in evidence, as-is journey maps and blueprints, a prioritised problem statement and, for public sector teams, the research artefacts an alpha assessment expects.

Start with a discovery

Four to eight weeks, depending on the service.
